About Fair Trade

Artisans Fairtrade is a member of the Fair Trade Federation (FTF).  Producers, wholesalers, and retailers whose track records show a commitment to the principles and practices of fair trade can become certified by the Fair Trade Federation.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is an alternative way of doing business - one that builds equitable, long-term partnerships between consumers in North America and producers in developing regions. Fair Trade businesses commit to:

• Paying a fair wage in the local context.

• Offering employees opportunities for advancement.

• Providing equal opportunities for all people, particularly the most disadvantaged.

• Engaging in environmentally sustainable practices.

• Being open to public accountability.

• Building long-term trade relationships.

• Providing healthy and safe working conditions within the local context.

• Providing financial and technical assistance to producers whenever possible.

These Fair Trade criteria were established by the Fair Trade Federation. From fairtradefederation.org

Fair Trade

"Fair trade" is much more than just words. Fair trade means an equitable and fair partnership between a marketing business in North America and a producing business in other parts of the world. Fair trade is a new, progressive way of doing business, a shift from the dominant paradigm of profit first at the expense of people and planet. Being a fair trade endorsed business means not just paying a fair price for a product, but engaging in environmentally sustainable practices. Fair trade is about long-term trade relationships with producers and making sure to be open to public accountability. It is about offering employees technical and financial assistance and opportunities for advancement. Basically, it is economic and social justice for the world's disadvantaged and empowerment for producers, including women.
